Virginia “Ginny” Mamere, 72, of Huron, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2026, surrounded by her husband and family at the Cleveland Clinic, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born on April 22, 1953, in Lorain, Ohio, to Howard and Virginia Sloan. Ginny graduated from Lorain High School in 1971.
Ginny was a registered nurse, graduating from Ohio University in 1978. She retired in 2015 after a devoted 37-year nursing career. She was a longtime member of the Firelands Chorale and St. Peter’s Choir. A lifelong lover of music, she resumed playing the violin in the early 2000s after a 30-year hiatus and was recently inspired to learn the harp as well. She played fiddle for The Moorhens, a Celtic band, and greatly enjoyed performing.
Ginny also loved gardening and was a member of The Garden Club, later becoming a Master Gardener. She was actively involved with The Prayer Path, Magnificat, and other women’s groups at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Community-minded, she served as a sponsor for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and was a coordinator with the after-school program in Berlin Heights.
She is survived by her husband, Russell Mamere; her daughter, L. Jasmin (Whalen) Vu, of Tauranga, New Zealand; and her son, Matthew Whalen, of Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by three stepsons: Scott Mamere of Columbus, Ohio; Jeff Mamere of Texas; and Brian Mamere of Huron, Ohio. Additional survivors include her sisters, Claudia Losey of Pickerington, Ohio, and Kelly Richter of Canton, Michigan; and her brother, Christopher Sloan of Lorain, Ohio. Ginny was blessed with 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Virginia Sloan, and her sister, Hilarie Peck.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., on January 27, 2026, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Huron, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Sandusky Chapter.
