Obituary

Suzanne Oliver Bacon, 95, of Huron, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 2, 2023, at Parkvue Healthcare Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Columbus, OH, the daughter of Glenn F. and Lucille S. Oliver, and sister to her older brother, Glenn, Jr. (“Newie”).  There she attended The University School and The Ohio State University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.  At Ohio State, she met John L. Bacon, a returning World War II Navy veteran who was studying business, and they were married there in 1948.  Following his Ohio State graduation, they moved to Sandusky where they lived until 1963, after which time they resided in Huron.

In living her deep faith, she was a cheerful, thoughtful and generous spirit who enjoyed and raised the spirits of those around her.  She devoted her life to supporting and encouraging her family as well as showing care for others in the community.  She was a dedicated Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader and made herself available to be present in every way possible to support and encourage the educational pursuits of her children.  She was well known for her cooking, and for young ones (and not-so-young ones, for that matter) she was particularly famous for her homemade applesauce and macaroni & cheese.  Her children and their friends retain fond memories of the “themed” birthday parties she held for them as they advanced through their years.  She made young ones always welcome in her home, and in their minds her thoughtful, caring nature for them was rivalled only by the candy drawer she maintained for their personal selections on every visit.

Beyond the home, she cared for others in her community through decades of service as an American Red Cross “Gray Lady” at the former Good Samaritan Hospital, followed by many years as a Board member of the American Red Cross of Erie County.  She also supported philanthropic efforts as a 70-year plus member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Sandusky Chapter BE.

Growing up in the shadows of Ohio State and having a brother, “Newie,” who played as starting halfback for the Buckeyes in the mid-40’s, she was an avid Ohio State Football fan who attended many classic games over the years.  Following her move to Sandusky, she became a devoted boater, enjoying many trips to the Lake Erie islands with her family and friends and in later years extended vacations with husband John to Lake Huron and the Trent-Severn Waterway leading to Georgian Bay.  Closer to home, she developed a love for gardening and became known for the beautiful roses she grew throughout the summer and shared with family and friends.  And in sports, she became a tennis player in her later years and enjoyed doubles with husband John and their friends throughout the year in Sandusky and during winter months in Naples, FL.

She is survived by her son, John O. Bacon of Sandusky; her daughter, Marcia L.B. Wilkinson (Erby) of Spring Hill, TN; her six grandchildren, Eva, Luke, Margo, Melanie, Lauren, and Allison; as well as her twelve great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents and her loving husband of 58 years, John.

There will be no visitation and memorial services will be private, with arrangements by Foster Funeral Home & Crematory in Huron.

Contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
