Robert (Bob) Hastings Obituary

HURON - Robert (Bob) Hastings, Sr. of Huron, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 8 at home, on his 92nd birthday. He was born November 8, 1928, the son of Alva Carl Hastings and Sarah Ramseyer Hastings. Growing up, Bob was a Berlin Heights resident and graduated from Berlin Heights High School.

Bob married Ida Ruth Henes in 1950, and together they raised their family in Huron. He worked for many decades in the construction business and was a talented carpenter and craftsman. His employers included Wayne Sommers, Tom Kramer, and Bay Construction. He spent the last 15 years of his career at Cedar Point. Some of the most beautiful homes in the Plum Brook, Beachwood Cove, and Chaussee areas were built by our father, including our family home in Huron.

Bob was recording secretary for the local carpenter’s union for 33 years. He served on Huron City Council and was chosen as Huron’s Young Man of the Year in 1966. He and Ida were recognized as Volunteers of the Year in 1996 from the City of Huron for their efforts to pick up trash when they walked; a tradition his son and daughter have continued. Bob was committed to serving the church as well as the community. He held many positions within the Huron United Methodist Church including trustee, usher, and dishwasher extraordinaire for the LOGOS program.

Bob’s passion in retirement was fixing bikes. “Bicycle Bob” was the go-to person if you needed a bike, wanted a bike repaired, or had a bike to donate. He performed repairs for free, charging only for parts. He donated bikes to Victory Kitchen and the Homeless Shelter for the less fortunate. Many youth and adults in Erie County are still to this day riding bikes refurbished by Bicycle Bob.

Bob and Ida enjoyed spending their post-retirement winters in Ft. Myers, FL, where they made many friends from all over the Midwest. Bob loved playing volleyball and tennis in Florida, and also played tennis in a senior league during the summer months when he was back in Huron.

Bob is survived by two daughters Cynthia (Joe) DeFazio and Donna Green of Huron; two sons, Robert Jr. (Patricia) Hastings and Thomas (Karen) Hastings of Huron; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his faithful companion Jitter the cat.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ida Ruth in 2018, his parents, and a sister, Martha Haynes.

Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will be held later this month.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the United Methodist Church, 333 Williams Street, Huron, 44839, for a project in his memory.
