Robert Bowers Obituary

HURON - On Monday, November 23, 2020, Robert Stephen Bowers (Bob), loving husband, father of three, proud grandfather and eldest brother passed away at the age of 78.

Bob was born on July 2, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio to Robert and Edith Bowers.  He was raised in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1960. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts and play collegiate basketball and football at Wilmington College. Bob was named MVP at Wilmington his senior year, but more importantly formed lifelong friendships while there. For 33 years he taught industrial arts and engineering design at Huron High School. He coached boys and girls basketball, football, track and was also a cheerleading advisor. In July 1999 Bob retired and in 2000 he was inducted into the Huron High School Athletic Hall of Fame as both an athlete and coach.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman and lifelong advocate of Lake Erie. He was a phenomenal hunter, a master trapper, and had an enduring passion for fishing. He accomplished his dream of starting his own fishing charter business, Fish Erie Charters, in 1986 and from that time forth garnered the nickname, Captain Bob.

He was a beloved teacher known for his deep, boisterous laugh, playful pranks and being a trusted listener. Bob’s greatest talent was at building family, a gift he learned from his parents. The Bowers house was the center of continuous gatherings of breakfasts and post-game parties for players, neighborhood fish fries, family holidays and cocktail hour where all were welcome.

He is survived by wife, Kimberly; children, Andrea, Robert, and Bradley Stephen and his wife Taylor; grandson Theodore Robert; siblings, John Bowers and his wife Margie and Dee Catri and her husband Randy; and nieces Wendy Catri and Ashley Bowers.

A private graveside service will be held at McMillian Cemetery, A celebration of life will be announced later, when public health concerns with covid-19 subside.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Services, 505 East Perkins Ave, Sandusky, 44870, (www.cancerservices.org)

Bob loved to say that “God doesn’t count the days you go fishing”. In his honor, slow down and appreciate life as it comes, and make a toast to the Captain.
