HURON – Richard A. Olmstead, 84, of Huron, passed away Thursday, August 27, 2020 at The Meadows in Huron.
Richard was born September 19, 1935 in New London to Toygh William and Lenore Lula (Longcoy) Olmstead. He graduated from Huron High School in 1955 and was the Class President.
Richard received numerous accolades while serving on the Huron Police Department. As the head of the Safety Program he was instrumental in bringing the Safety Town Program to Huron. He retired from Wilkes & Co. after 35 years of service.
He was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Huron, Christ Episcopal Church, Huron and the OH Laborers Union Local 480 where last year received his 50 year pin.
Richard leaves behind his High School sweetheart and wife of 63 years Miriam (Steinmetz); daughters, Sara Lasch and Linda (Marc) Connell; grandchildren, Amanda (Adam Evans) Connell, Heather Lasch, Thomas (Katie) Connell, Scott (Brianne) Lasch, Sheri Connell; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Xavier, Amelia, Mack, Willa, Theo, and Milo, along with other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Toygh, and stepmother, Esther Olmstead; his mother, Lenore, and stepfather, Allen Mindell; grandparents; sisters, Caryl Decker (2008) and Sandra Myers (2017); a niece, Joan Decker (2009); and a nephew, Richard “Ricky” Decker.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, Richard’s remains will be laid to rest on his 85th birthday, Sept 19th with a graveside service at Scott Cemetery, Huron Avery Rd, Huron, at 11 a.m. and a Celebration of Life Open House to immediately follow from 12 -3 at Mesenberg Catering Hall, Cleveland Rd. West, Huron.
The family requests Covid-19 regulations be observed and masks be worn.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101, Christ Episcopal Church, 120 Ohio St, Huron 44839, or to one’s favorite charity.
