Richard Klein Obituary

HURON – Richard L. Klein, 98, of Huron, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at Brookdale Muirfield Assisted Living, in Dublin, OH.

He was born January 9, 1923 in Huron and was a life long resident until he and his wife, June, moved to Parkvue in Sandusky and then more recently to Dublin, Ohio to be closer to their daughter.

Dick enlisted in the US Army in Dec. of 1942.  He earned his paratrooper wings at Jump School at Fort Benning, Georgia and was attached to the 101st Airborne Div. when sent to Europe.

On June 6, 1944, Dick made his first combat jump into Normandy during the D-Day invasion.  He went on to fight in the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden and finally in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded and sent home in Dec. of 1944.

After leaving the military, Dick attended and graduated from OSU in 1949.  There he met and married his wife of 71 years, June

Denton Klein

Dick first started teaching in Huron at the Ohio Street School (McCormick) until the new Huron High opened in the 1958-1959 school year.  Later he coached football, baseball and was head basketball coach for many years. He taught American History and was head of the Social Studies Dept.  After earning his Masters Degree he became the Assistant Principal at the high school and later became Principal at McCormick Junior High.

During his tenure, he served for decades as Athletic Director until 1979.

He and June loved to travel and spent much of their retirement doing just that.  They had been back to Europe several times to visit the battlefields where Dick fought.

Dick is survived by his wife, June (Denton) Klein; daughter, Terry (Bill) Herzog of Shawnee Hills, OH; son, David (Jackie) Klein of Huron; and two grandchildren, Michael and Alex Klein.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Irene (Lyons) Klein.
