Richard Hartley, 84, of Huron, Ohio, passed away on August 3, 2024, at Parkvue following a brief illness.
Born on February 18, 1940, in Sandusky, Ohio, Richard was the son of Thomas and Aileen (Ireton) Hartley. He graduated from Huron High School in 1958 and went on to earn his degree from Ohio University in 1962. Richard served with honor in the Navy during the Vietnam War, playing many sports including travel tennis.
Richard was a man of many talents and passions. He wrote for area papers as a sports writer covering local high school sports and was a dedicated master gardener. He designed the children’s garden at a local school and was recognized often for his volunteer efforts. Richard was also the HHS boys and girls tennis coach in the 80's. He was a role model to many with his love of nature and his treatment of her.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Sandra (Bob) Schuh and Michelle Shumaker, both of Huron; his grandchildren, Cody, Devon, and Connor; great-grandchildren; his sister, Judy; and his brother, Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and best friend, Carolyn (Leidheiser) Hartley, whom he first noticed their kindergarten year in Huron; and his brother, James Hartley.
The family will hold a private gathering in his memory.
