HURON, formerly of Vermilion – Nancy Lee (Redman) Barnes passed away January 23, 2023. She lived her life with an “unwavering conviction of God’s ability to govern life.”
She was born September 11, 1931 in Columbus, and moved to the Vermilion Lagoons with her husband Dick and their family in 1970, to be closer to the lake and their sailboats.
With her faith and her Christian Science beliefs, by Mary Baker Eddy, she lovingly followed her husband, through their adventurous pioneering life, for 75 years. They were high school sweethearts from the class of ’49 at Upper Arlington High School. Nancy attended The Ohio State University.
Nancy and Dick were past members of the Vermilion Yacht Club, the Vermilion Boat Club, Catawba Island Club, and The Crews Nest on Put In Bay.
While being a very involved mother, Nancy, co-owned a needlepoint shop in Vermilion called “The Black Sheep,” where she custom painted needlepoint canvases for customers. She also created and operated a quarterly magazine called “Southbound” with boating enthusiast subscribers who Nancy and Dick met in their 25 years of operating their trawler, named “Lee”, to and from Florida and the Bahamas for the winters. After they sold their boat, then enjoyed taking their motor home, with a 1956 14’ Lyman in tow.
Nancy is survived by her sons, Rick Barnes of Sandusky, Skip Barnes of Cleveland, Scott (Heather) Barnes of Huron; daughter, Lisa Bloor of Huron; grandchildren, Kate Weller, Jill Stefanski, Mary Blackburn, Nancy Lee Schoelwer, Jep Bloor; and great-grandchildren, Archer, Caroline Mary, and Vivien Lee.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Barnes in 2021; an infant son; her parents, Edmund and Vera (Adkinson) Redman; a sister and brother in law, Vera and Richard Blake; and her brother, Kit (Kaatje) Redman.
