Marilyn Shearer Obituary

Marilyn Shearer (Mielke), 95, of Huron, passed away on February 25, 2023 at The Commons of Providence, Sandusky, Ohio

She was born on July 14, 1927 in Sandusky to the late Arthur and Esther (Kollman) Mielke. She was a 1945 graduate of Sandusky High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business in 1949 from Ohio University.

Marilyn was dedicated and hardworking which is evident by her many accomplishments and journeys over the years. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Zeta Tau Alpha sorority,  The College Woman’s Club, Huron Study Club, and pot luck group. She managed  the Battered Women’s Shelter and served on the Erie County Board of Corrections. She and her husband, Samuel, also operated Fireland’s Book Store. Marilyn was elected to the Huron City Council in 2001, serving as the Mayor from 2007 – 2011. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and was a state chapter President, Ohio Women’s Policy and Research Commission – Ohio Women INC., Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Ohio Commission of Public Service Advisory Committee, and Ohio Judicial Review Committee of the Ohio Supreme Court. After retiring from business, Marilyn returned to school and studied computer science and taught programming at BGSU Firelands.  Marilyn loved to travel. The family traveled by car in the summer of 1962 through Mexico to the Yucatán Peninsula. In 1974, she was one of the first groups of Westerners permitted to tour China, and she also traveled Europe extensively. She was proud to say that she and Sam built one of the first homes in the Plum Brook neighborhood themselves entirely with hand tools.

She is survived by her sons, David (Terri) Shearer of Arroyo Grande, CA and Joel (Debbie) Shearer of Huron; four granddaughters, Kelly (Don) Ballah of Milan, Bethanie (Tony) Protzman of Clyde, Hannah (Steven) Doherty of Oceano, CA, and Andria (Tony) Leung of Los Angeles, CA; and seven great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Kit Doherty, Madison and Brooks Ballah, and Alyssa, Sarah, and Ella Protzman.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Samuel Shearer, and her parents also her  brother James Mielke.
