Marian Howland Obituary

HURON — Marian L. Howland, a lifelong resident of the Huron area, who helped establish Huron's first Public Library in the 1930s, passed away peacefully Monday, May 3, 2021 at Kingston Residence of Vermilion. She was 101.

Marian was born January 11,1920 in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1937 where she proudly served as the captain of the girl's basketball team from 1934 to 1937. She graduated from the Sandusky Business College. During World War II she worked for US Ordinance at Plumbrook, to support the war effort. After the war, Marian worked at Eastern States Mill in Huron. Marian retired in 1975 after serving as the matron for the Erie County Detention Home in Sandusky for 25 years. After her retirement she worked as head of housekeeping at the Hotel Breakers at Cedar Point.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Huron for over 90 years. She taught Sunday School and worked with the West Minister Youth Group.

She was one of the eight Huron High School girls responsible for organizing and starting the Huron Public Library. She was a charter member of the Zonta Club of Sandusky and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 171, Huron.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Thelma Howland of Cantonment, FL; five grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Burress (Rusty) Howland in 2001; her son Randolph Howland in 2002; five brothers, Paul Rene, Chad, Tom, John, and Fred Hammond; and parents, Paul and Helen (Karako) Hammond.

Friends may call Saturday, May 15th from 11 a.m. until time of service at 12 noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 225 Williams Street, Huron with Pastor Sara Hodsden officiating. 

Entombment will take place at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
