Maralyn Hiatt Obituary

Maralyn E. Hiatt passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 9, 2024, at the Providence Care Center. She was born August 4, 1926, to Merrill C. and Zelpha E. Yount in Indianapolis.

Maralyn was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati majoring in metallurgical engineering and was often the only woman in her classes. She met her husband William R. Hiatt at UC and they married on December 27, 1950. They lived in Connecticut until their move to Huron in 1967 with New Departure Hyatt.

She was an avid reader, gardener, fan of Indiana University basketball, golfer, and master baker of chocolate chip cookies which fueled Bill and many cross-country and track races. Maralyn supported the athletic activities of her son and grandchildren attending events across Ohio. She enjoyed her daily walks and continued to go to The Gym in her 90s.

Maralyn worked crossword puzzles daily to keep her brain sharp and was addicted to Freecell. An early adopter of technology, she had a cell phone and SUV before her grandchildren.

After Bill’s retirement, he and Maralyn traveled in a converted van and, during their lifetime together, visited all fifty states and all the Canadian provinces.

Family came first and she was always “there”. Maralyn was a strong believer in education, echoing her mother saying “educate a man, you educate a man; educate a woman, you educate a family”.

The family would like to thank the Providence Care Center Staff for their kind and loving care of Maralyn during her final years. She repeatedly said she was very content there.

Maralyn is survived by daughter Anne (Gary) Hinton of Huron, granddaughters Megan (Shawn) McClory of Hilliard, Alison Talcott of Dublin, Lisa Hiatt (Raymond Molinar) of Pasadena CA, grandson Matthew (Amanda) Hiatt of Sylvania, great-grandchildren Sara, Jayna, Jackson, Maycee, Caleb, and Ruby, and daughter-in-law Lauri Justen. She was the beloved aunt of Don Charles, Judy Charles, Janne Hicks, Julie Carrier, Jennifer Galloway, Sara Hiatt, Sherry Weeks, Russell Rider, Dennis Rider ,and Paul Hiatt.

She was preceded in death by William, her husband of 62 years, son David Hiatt, and sister Barbara Charles.
