HURON - Leonard Homyak, 93, of Huron, died Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at his home. He was born in McKees Rocks, PA, the son of John Alexander and Anna May Homyak.
Len graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950 as a Chemical Engineer. In 1953, he worked at Goodyear Atomic in Waverly, OH, where he met his wife, Jo Emma Gilbert. The couple relocated to Huron, OH in the early 1960’s where they raised their young family. There, Len worked at the NASA Plum Brook Reactor. He started as a Project Engineer working with cryogenics. Eventually he became the Reactor Manager and in 1988 he was tapped to be the Space Power Facility Manager. The “Space Tank” was the world’s largest vacuum chamber and simulated outer space vacuum, heat, and light conditions.
He is survived by his three children, Chet Homyak of Rowley, MA, Wayne (Cindy) Homyak, of Huron, and Mark (Peg) Homyak, of Fairview Park, OH; his brother, Eugene (Joan) Homyak of Ann Arbor, MI; five grandchildren, Beth Homyak, Jayson (Adrienne Starkey) Homyak, Bryan Homyak, Brad (Kayla) Homyak, and Mark A. Homyak; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Emma; his father and mother; his sister, Olga Kasnot; a grandchild, Megan Homyak; and an infant son, Matthew Homyak.
The family has elected to have no formal funeral services.
