HURON - Laura Mae Smyth age 92, passed away on the evening of Mother’s day, May 10, 2020 in Kingston Residence of Vermilion assisted living after a brief illness.
Laura was born May 4th, 1928 in Cleveland, OH to Michael and Margaret (Marhevka) Yenik , immigrants from Vienna Austria & Poland.
At the age of 5 she became an orphaned child and was placed in Beachbrook Orphanage in Cleveland, OH. She was then placed in Foster care at the age of 9. Laura was a graduate of Henrietta High School where she was proud to be a cheerleader.
In her early years Laura was a waitress. That is where she met the love of her life John Smyth. They were married on April 1st, 1952. They moved to Huron, OH where they owned and operated their restaurant named the Schooner. Later in life, Laura worked at Collart Interiors as a meticulous seamstress. But her greatest passion in life was being a homemaker and an amazing mother to her three children. Anyone who has met Laura, knew her as the kindest, gentlest soul. She always put the concerns of others before herself and never spoke an ill word of anyone.
Laura is survived by her daughter Barbara A. (William) Orshoski of Huron, Oh, grandchildren Juli (Kevin) Russ, Bill Orshoski, Jeff Orshoski; great- grandchildren, Michael (Carlie) Henzler, Nicholas Orshoski, Morgan and Kyle Russ; great great grandchild Desmond Henzler; her daughter, Nancy J. (Scott) Willard of Vermilion; grandchildren James P. (Kayla) West, Katie M. (Brent) McConnell, great granddaughters, Rylee and Cora McConnell and Tomasina West; her son, John (Linda) Smyth, Mechanicsville Va.
In addition to her parents, Laura is preceded in death by her husband, John Smyth in 1990; her beloved sister, Florence J. Knallay in 1981 along with many other aunts, uncles, niece & nephews.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Kingston and Stein Hospice for their loving care and for allowing her children to be by her side in her final days.
Private services will be Fri, May 15th at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron with Chaplain Mel Sayler officiating.
