Kathryn Wittmer Obituary

Kathryn “KC” Lee Clark Wittmer

March 2, 1933 – July 26, 2025

Kathryn “KC” Lee Clark Wittmer passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, at the age of 92. Born at home during the Great Depression on March 2, 1933, in Parma Heights, Ohio, KC grew up with her sisters Mary Louise and June, helping to raise animals and grow food during a time when resourcefulness was a way of life.

KC was a lifelong learner, a bright and curious mind who went on to study at Kent State University. Soon after, she met the love of her life, David E. Wittmer. Together, they built a family grounded in love, faith, and resilience — raising five children during the 1950s and 60s. KC’s commitment to nurturing extended beyond her own family as she served as a dedicated public elementary school teacher for 25 years (Kindergarten and 4th grade), shaping the lives of countless students. Even after retirement, she returned to the classroom to work one-on-one with students who struggled to read, always believing that every child deserved a champion.

Her faith was central to her life. She volunteered at church, taught Bible school, sang in the choir, and played the bells. KC was also an avid poet, often crafting verses that captured the beauty and humor of everyday life. In her kitchen, she was famous for her incredible apple pancakes and French pancakes, recipes that became beloved family traditions. There was never a shortage of food at KC’s table—she would serve seconds and thirds before ever sitting down to eat, herself.

KC’s love of adventure carried through her entire life. In retirement, she and Dave enjoyed boating on the Great Lakes aboard the KCDew, often docking at sand bars so the family could swim and enjoy the sunshine. They cherished outings to Put-in-Bay and RVing across the country. One of their favorite RV adventures was a journey out West to Yellowstone National Park, a trip filled with breathtaking landscapes and cherished memories. KC and Dave also shared a love for Ohio State football, often cheering on the Buckeyes together on fall Saturdays. No family outing was complete without persuading KC to stop by Toft’s Dairy for an ice cream cone, a sweet tradition she never turned down.

KC’s zest for life never waned—even in her mid-80s, she fulfilled a dream of riding an elephant in Thailand. Grandchildren fondly remember riding the Raptor with KC at Cedar Point, and being delighted when she would return from Florida trips with shark teeth treasures tucked in her suitcase.

KC was deeply engaged in her community. She was a proud member of the Practical Gardeners Club, Quilting Club, and the Current Events Club, where she loved hosting gatherings that sparked thoughtful conversation and connection. She spent countless hours crocheting baby clothes and blankets to donate to local hospitals and hospice centers, participating in a cherished project called “Sweater Angels,” ensuring every newborn could go home wrapped in a handmade outfit.

Though she stood just 4’11”, KC had a commanding presence and a larger-than-life spirit. She was the heart of her family — a devoted mother, a loving and engaged grandmother and great grandmother and a quick-witted, clever matriarch who always had time to listen, to guide, and to laugh. She was known for her love of Dr. Seuss books, as well as her uncanny backward renditions of “Rindercella and the Prandsom Hince,” stories that became a treasured family tradition. KC’s mental fortitude, humor, and generosity shaped all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband David, her son David Wittmer, and her cherished dogs Lulu, Greta, and Pixie. She is survived by her children Edward, Robert (Mary), Peggy, and Daniel (Karen); and her daughter in law, Nancy Wittmer, her grandchildren Jenny (Patrick), Amy (Daniel), William, Nicole (Dustin), Brian (Abigail), Alex (Courtney), Amanda (Chase), and Elizabeth (Jeremy); and her great-grandchildren Olivia, Ethan, Henry, Benjamin, Nora, Bailey, Vincent, and Violet. She will also be missed by her faithful feline companion, Minnie Pig.

KC’s legacy is one of kindness, wisdom, creativity, and unwavering love. Her family is grateful for her long and beautiful life and the many lessons she leaves behind.
