Karen Colon Obituary

HURON - Karen R. Colon, 78, of Huron, Ohio, passed away peacefully after a short illness on April 11, 2020, at the Parkvue Community Home in Sandusky.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and lifelong friend to many of those who will dearly miss her.

Karen graduated from Huron High School in 1959.  She married the love of her life, Walter Colon, the following year.  Walter died tragically in 1976. She lived her entire life in Huron, Ohio, remaining close with many of her high school friends. She enjoyed numerous get togethers, especially her monthly card club that included Linda Boos, Nancy Wechter, Barbara Hinckley, Dee Hartley, Sara Boos, Judy Hartley, Gail Kurtz, Claudia Wallace, and Anna Dunn.  They all loved her Peach Pie! She worked at many places throughout her life such as, Norwalk Trucking, Berlin-Milan Schools, Quarter Horse Saloon, and the Whirlpool plant in Clyde, where she was affectionately known as “mom”. She met the second love of her life in 1985, Johnnie Frakes. The two remained together until Johnnie’s death in 2010.  There were two other men in her life for the past 40 years, Tom Selleck and Richard Dean Anderson, the men of her dreams! She was raised by her mother to be a dedicated and lifelong fan of the Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers (nobody is perfect, go Pittsburgh!). She rarely missed a game on TV and loved to attend games in person with her family and friends.  One of Karen’s passions was cooking. Her specialties included lemon pie, french toast, red sauce sloppy joes, fruit salad, lasagna, frosted cookies, as well as dozens of other treats everyone but her obnoxiously picky son loved! Outside of spending time with her family, she loved to travel. She visited many places in her retirement, including Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, South Dakota, Myrtle Beach, and her favorite vacation spot, the Mohican River in Loudonville, Ohio.

She is survived by her children, Bill (Rachel) Colon and Cynthia (Jon) Ickes, her step-children, Shelley Hollingsworth, and Jamie Voetsch; her grandchildren Maia, Mason, Sage, and Maverick Colon, Tenesha and Jay Hartley, Christian and Cody Ortolani, Kellan Hollingsworth, Kimberly Sohbi, Jaysen Frakes, Nathan Spring, Cory and Stephenie Voetsch, and Brooke Frakes; 15 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous lifelong friends from Huron, Ohio including Judy Hartley and Nancy Wechter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Milo and Ruth Blough; her husband Walter Colon, her partner of over two decades, Johnnie Frakes; her step-son Tim Frakes; her son-in-law Gene Hollingsworth and her grandchildren Sheena Hartley and Sierra Colon.

A celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later time. Please email billcolon@att.net if you would like to be notified of the date and time.
