Helen V. (Slate) Mihalek

HURON – Helen V. Mihalek, 80, passed away, Saturday, November 21, 2020 surrounded by her loving children.

   She was born April 20, 1940 in Scotland County, SC and has been a longtime resident of Huron. 

   Helen lived a life of devotion.  She was incredibly devoted to the love of her life, Fred Mihalek.  Helen and Fred met “buzzing the Ave” in Norwalk and were married in 1958.   They both loved hotrod cars, but Helen’s dedication to her family, grandchildren, and home shined most brightly.  She paid meticulous care and detail to all she pursed and everything she held dear, especially her family.  She was a true example, that loyalty through better or worse, and choosing right living on life’s journey, were always most rewarding.  She definitely won her race here on earth.

   She enjoyed bowling, ceramics, hotrod car shows, creating stained-glass artwork, RV camping, gardening, and traveling.  She worked as a seamstress for Sawmill Creek Resort, Huron, for 30 years.

   She is survived by her daughters, JoAnn Mihalek, and Mary Boos, both of Huron, sons, Dan (Lori) Mihalek of Florence, and Joe (Molly) Mihalek of Huron; 6 grandchildren, Julie (Brooks) Spiess of Toledo, Jordan and Clinton Boos of Huron, Jacob Ashe of Huntington Beach, CA, Jessica Ashe of Lakewood and James Ashe of Wakeman; a sister, Arlene Cahill of Bermuda Run, NC; and brothers, James, William, and Ronald Slate, all of Norwalk.

   She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Mihalek in 2008; her parents, James and Mary Elizabeth (Carmichael) Slate; and sisters, Marjorie Crawley and Annie Caroline Slate.  

   A private family committal service will be held at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Huron Rescue Squad, 417 Main Street, Huron 44839 or to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, 44870.
