George Sheard Obituary

George W. Sheard, 96, of Huron, died Sunday evening, May 8, 2022 at The Meadows at Osborn Park.

He was born on March 30, 1926 in Hamilton, Ohio and grew up in Hanover township, Butler County, Ohio living with his grandparents, William and Emma Bruck, on their family farm.

George graduated from Hanover High School in June 1944 and immediately joined the Navy.  He served during WWII in the South Pacific as a Coxswain on the U.S.S. Lark, and was honorably discharged in June of 1946.

After the war, George traveled the country building silos.  It was while he was building a silo in Shinrock that George met the love of his life in Huron, Shirley Brown.  In 1949, George began a long career in the baking industry as a driver/salesman for Sunbeam Bakery.  He retired from Nickles Bakery after serving schools, grocery stores, and restaurants, mostly in the Huron area, for more than 40 years.

George then worked at Cedar Point for another 22 years, finally retiring at the age of 89.

George was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Huron, Rotary, and was also appointed to serve on the Huron City Council in 1970.  He served as Huron’s mayor for eight years and was on council for a total of 33 years.  During that time, he was council chaplain, and was the council’s representative on the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Government.

George is survived by a daughter, Cindy (Howard) Carruthers of Huron; a son, Mike (Willa) Sheard of Helena, Montana; three grandchildren, Aaron Carruthers of Huron, Adam (Nkemjika) Carruthers of Rockville, Maryland, Katie Sheard of Helena, Montana, and Stacie (Matt) Adams of Helena, Montana; as well as four great-grandchildren, Trevor Hernandez, Ifeanyi Carruthers, and Landon and Lucas Adams.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents, Edith and Dewey Longsdorff; his sisters, Ruth and Betty; and a great-grandson, Travis.
