Edward Schilman Obituary

HURON - Edward Rudolf Schilman, age 95, formerly of Huron, died August 30 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.  He was born in 1923 to Rudolf and Amelia (Rosseler) Schilman in Cleveland, Ohio graduating from West Technical High School where he developed a lifelong passion for aviation, photography and technical education – actually building Pratt& Whitney airplane engines in shop class.  He left Cleveland for the US Army where he served in WWII with the 3163 Signal Company, 3rd Armored Division under General Simpson in Europe, ending his service in the Pentagon.  Returning to Ohio, Ed enrolled at Ohio State under the GI bill earning a Bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate, and married the love of his life and girl across the street, Millie Salay.  Ed’s love of vocational education led him to Sandusky, Ohio in 1953 where he spent his career – earning a Master’s in education from BGSU while teaching: electronics; shop; and night school; directing Sandusky High’s vocation education programs, and leading Junior Achievement programs.  A man of faith, Ed was a lifelong Lutheran belonging first to Mount Calvary Lutheran in Cleveland, St Paul’s in Sandusky and later to Zion Lutheran in Huron.  He led his life as an example of his love for Christ.  Ed’s greatest love was family and friends.  He valued his relationships with the people in his life, enjoying the conversation and babble of get-togethers and sharing of meals.  Father to three children, he raised them with love and faith. Ed was preceded in death by his son Edward Paul (Chip), son-in-law Terry Bellamy and brothers’ Harry and Leonard Eggert.  He is survived by Millie, his wife of over 65 years, daughters Joyce (Terry) Bellamy of Sandusky and Karen (Ken) McCune of Indianapolis, grandsons Matt Bellamy and Jeromy Bellamy, great grandson Brayden Bellamy, sisters Ruth Gurney and Jean Schuler, and many nieces and nephews.  Visitation with the family is on Tues, Sept 4 from 5-7 pm at Foster Funeral Home, 410 Main St, Huron and immediately before the funeral on Wed, Sept 5th at 11am at Zion Lutheran Church 930 Main St, Huron.  In lieu of flowers Ed would appreciate gifts to Zion Lutheran Church, Huron, or the Ohio Veteran’s Home Sandusky - Social Activities.
