Carol Shoaff Obituary

HURON - Carol Maher Shoaff was born on July 3, 1933 and passed away December 1, 2020 in Sandusky.

Carol lived with her mother (Averill Dean Maher) and father (John Maher) and sister Mary Ann  (all deceased) for approximately the first five years of her life in Berea at which time the family moved to a new home in North Royalton, Ohio.

Carol attended both elementary and high school in North Royalton and graduated from North Royalton High in 1951. From 1951 to early 1955 Carol worked in Cleveland, Ohio at the Standard Oil Corporation HQ.

On February 19, 1955, Carol and Allen Shoaff were married in New York City at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. After the wedding, Carol and Allen moved to Staten Island NY where Allen was assigned as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Carol is survived by her husband Allen of 65 years and three children: Lucinda (Lucy) Bunsey (Bob) of Huron, Ohio; Joann Skelton (Malcolm) of Pembroke Pines Florida and Thomas Shoaff (Mary) of Colby Kansas. Carol has six grandchildren: Brian Skelton (Winsy); Lori Hartman (Rex), Juli Cagliostro (Joe), Meghan LeMaster (Andrew), Reed Shoaff (Emily), and Lauren Shoaff. Also, Carol was blessed with sixteen great grandchildren: Milo Skelton; Finn, Lucy Ann and Wyat Hartman; Maggie, Wesley, Dexter and August Cagliostro; Penelope and Nora LeMasters; Phineas, Abraham, Philippa, Penelope, Clement and Martha Shoaff.

Additionally, Carol is survived by her cousins Fred Maher and Jack Root of Berea, nieces Sue Weppelman (Joe) and Diane Bailey (David) of Medina County.

In addition to six cities in Ohio and New York, Carol and her husband lived in several states including Miami-Dade County Florida where Carol graduated from LPN and RN school and went on to enjoy a rich and rewarding career as a Registered Nurse in Florida hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Carol and Allen also lived in Punta Gorda, Florida for many years. Additionally, Carol and Allen lived in Fort Kent, Maine and Alexandria, Virginia before returning to Ohio in 2009 to settle down in Erie County.

Family was the true pleasure and happiness Carol enjoyed in life. The mention of her three children made her blue eyes sparkle and brought a great smile to her face. Her children (Cindy, Jo & Tom) provided exciting and loving memories, too many to mention. Carol was a devout believer and a member of the Catholic faith her entire life. Her unwavering practice and belief of Christian values and biblical principles served as a solid foundation for her personal and family life. These positive factors helped shape the Christian values of her children. These values also served her well in her social life and in her professional career as a Registered Nurse.  Her life as a woman, wife, friend, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother was unshakable because FAITH was a critical cornerstone in her everyday life for 87 years.

In addition to her three children there were the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carol was truly a fortunate woman who helped build a beautiful legacy, unique in every way. She was, and will remain, a blessing to her family and many friends.

A memorial service for the family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carol’s name to Stein Hospice of Erie County 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. www.Steinhospice.org.  Carol’s family extends gratitude and thanks to Stein Hospice and their wonderful aides, nurses, and doctors, and Chaplain Dave.  We also thank the Parkvue Community Health Care Center, Executive Director Dan Miller along with their outstanding nurses, STNAs and other staff members who provided Carol with a loving and caring environment during her stay.
