HURON – Robert John Kurtz, 78, of Huron, passed away Friday, May 24, 2019 at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.
He was born January 21, 1941 in Sandusky and was a lifelong resident of the Huron area. He graduated from Sandusky High School in 1959. He married his high school sweetheart, Gail on April 11, 1959.
In his early years he was “Congo Bob” at Jungle Larry’s African Safari in Cedar Point. He then took a job with the Ford Motor Company, Sandusky Plant, retiring in 1992. While working for Ford, he also owned several businesses in Huron. In the 1960’s he owned the Sunoco Gas Station and Bob’s Pizza House on Main Street, all, while also helping at his in-laws marina, Green’s Boat Service. In the 1970’s and 80’s he co-owned Custom Canvas with his wife.
He was a member of the Rubicon Masonic Lodge #237 and was Past Master in 2002; a member of Zenobia Temple Shrine- Evzone Unit; a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason; a Royal Arch Mason; and a member of the Firelands Shrine Club.
As a hobby, he enjoyed flying all types of radio-controlled aircraft and was a member of the LZ RC Club.
He is survived by his wife, Gail P. (Green) Kurtz; daughters, Lori (William) Fazenbaker of Willard, Susan Kurtz of Harrisburg, PA; a son, Robert (Sylvia) Kurtz of Vermilion; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Katherine (Terry) Cornelius, of Inverness, FL; Dora Peterson of Sandusky, Nancy Casey of Melbourne, FL, Patricia Lewis of Sandusky, Carol Beatty of Perkins; brothers, Norman (Nancy) Kurtz of Maumee, David (Ilene) Kurtz of Bonita Springs, FL, and Roland (Rose) Kurtz of Dayton.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Catherine (Wood) Kurtz.
Friends may call Friday, May 31, from 10:30 a.m. until time of Masonic Services at 11 a.m. at the Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main Street, Huron, immediately following, Pastor Heidi Strickler, of Harbortown Community Foursquare Church, Vermilion, will officiate the funeral service.
Cremation has taken place and burial will be at Scott Cemetery, Huron.
