Richard Matthew Schuh

HURON - Richard Matthew Schuh, 89, of Huron, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2019 after a short illness, with his family at his side at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.

   He was born November 17, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to Peter and Agnes (Dahm) Schuh.  He graduated from DePaul Academy and then DePaul University with degrees in math and physics.  In 1953 he married Katharine Mary Kelly of Chicago.  They travelled to the West coast where he served as a Naval Officer during the Korean War.  After discharge, they moved to Cincinnati, where Dick was employed by General Electric, then took a job with NASA at Plumbrook Station in Sandusky, Ohio.  He retired from NASA at Lewis Research Center (now Glenn) in Cleveland after 28 years.

   A resident of Huron since 1960, Dick enjoyed sailing, was an avid runner into his 70's and played tennis with a senior men's group at Faben's Park.  He spent much of his time volunteering for the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, the Lions Club, VIA (Volunteers in Action), Dial a Drive, the St Vincent DePaul Society and more.  He also put in many hours working with the Lake Erie Irish Cultural Society on the Huron Irish Festivals, which ran for over 25 years.  Dick was a huge Chicago Bears fan, as well as the Cubs, having grown up a mile from Wrigley Field in Chicago.  And then there was his great love of singing.  He took to the stage in college, then performed locally in the Huron Playhouse, Firelands College Theater, the Firelands Chorus, Town and Country Theater in Norwalk, and was a long-standing member of the St Peter Church choir.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Katharine "Kelly" Schuh; children, Kathleen (Joe) Baird of Columbus, Karen (Mac) Lehrer of Huron and Bob (Sandy) Schuh of Huron; grandchildren, Andrea Baird, Kelly Lehrer, Matthew Lehrer, Erin Lehrer and Connor Schuh;  and many nieces and nephews.

   He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Agnes Schuh, and brothers, Tom, Jack and Dan.

   Friends and family may call at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron, on Thursday, June 20th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm.

   Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Church, 430 Main St., Huron, Friday, June 21st at 10:30 am with Fr. Jeff McBeth officiating.
