HURON, NORWALK – Mabel E. (Mesner) Opper, 100, it is with great sadness that the family of Mabel Opper announces her passing after 100 years of a long and happy life. Mabel, of Norwalk and formerly of Huron, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec 15, 2019 in Stein Hospice Care at Gaymont Nursing Center, Norwalk.
Mabel was born July 15, 1919 in Sandusky and graduated from St. Mary High School. Mabel and her husband, Nelson H. Opper, were married on October 10, 1945. They lived in Sandusky until they built “Opper's Happy Nest” in Rye Beach, Huron. There they raised three children, David N. (Nancy) Opper of Norwalk, Linda S. (Ronald) Hartman of Bellevue, and Larry P. (Katherine C.) Opper of Norwalk.
Mabel was blessed with ten grandchildren, Jessica (Mike) Brand, Joshua Opper, Matthew Opper, Sarah (Scott) Gross, Eric Hartman, Bryan (Cassandra) Hartman, Elizabeth (Gene) Wilson, Jennie (Chris) Fraizer, Christopher (Lindsey) Opper, and Karen (Jacob) Rhoad, and was doubly blessed with nine great-grandchildren.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson, parents, William F. and Hedwig “Hadie” M. (Good) Mesner; her siblings, Lawrence E. Mesner, Frances M. (Delmer) Smith, Beatrice L. (Edward) Beier, Paul W. Mesner, and John A. (Peg) Mesner.
Mabel was an avid card player. She loved playing pinochle, but played euchre and other various games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mabel was a breast cancer survivor for more than 60 years. Devoted to her family, Mabel was a lifelong member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Huron. She volunteered at Providence and Firelands Hospitals, and Firelands Catholic Education Development Office (FECDO) at Norwalk Catholic Schools, for many years.
Family and friends may gather at St. Peter Catholic Church, 430 Main Street, Huron, Thursday, Dec 19th from 10 a.m. until time of Mass at Noon. Rev. Jeffrey McBeth will officiate. Burial will follow at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, 44870 or a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
